OpenAI pauses Pro subscriptions amid high GPT-6 Astra demand

OpenAI has temporarily suspended new subscriptions and upgrades for its $200 monthly ChatGPT Pro plan due to unprecedented demand for its latest flagship model, GPT-6 Astra. The company stated that the Pro tier places the highest load on its infrastructure, and the pause is intended to maintain service quality for existing subscribers.

Released on September 3, 2026, GPT-6 Astra is described by OpenAI President Greg Brockman as a “generational leap” that marks the beginning of the AGI era. The model features advanced capabilities in reasoning, coding, computer use, and professional workflows, allowing it to interact directly with software environments to complete multi-step tasks.

While the Pro tier is paused, OpenAI’s more affordable Go and Plus plans, as well as API access, remain available. Additionally, the company has launched the GPT-Live-1 API, which enables real-time, full-duplex natural voice interactions with improved interruption handling and reduced latency.
