OpenAI ends Custom GPT creation for private ChatGPT accounts

OpenAI has ended the ability to create new Custom GPTs on private ChatGPT accounts. While existing Custom GPTs will continue to function and creation remains possible within enterprise environments, the change marks a shift in how users tailor the AI to specific tasks.

The transition points toward a new model referred to as ‘Skills’. Unlike Custom GPTs, which require opening a specific bot for a task, Skills are designed to be individual, clearly defined capabilities—such as brand voice or specific guidelines—that can be summoned during a conversation. This approach allows for the combination of multiple abilities within a single chat session. While similar functionality is already available via Anthropic’s Claude, ChatGPT’s Skills are currently limited to enterprise and developer environments.
