OpenAI engineer arrested for allegedly planting recording device in meeting room
Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian engineer at OpenAI, has been arrested and charged by federal authorities for allegedly using a device to intercept oral communications. The incident was discovered on September 30 at OpenAI’s San Francisco office, where security personnel found a sophisticated, encrypted recording device hidden inside toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI, the device was intended to capture sensitive discussions regarding superintelligence technology, proprietary research, and strategic business plans. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Alfozan near the unauthorized meeting area on multiple occasions. Additionally, a second similar device was discovered in Alfozan’s bag. Investigators also noted suspicious chatbot queries linked to an account associated with his spouse regarding the construction and encryption of audio recording equipment.
OpenAI stated it utilized its own internal AI models to analyze the device and identify the responsible employee. The company has since terminated Alfozan’s employment. OpenAI emphasized that there is currently no evidence that model weights, source code, or customer data were accessed or exfiltrated. If convicted, Alfozan faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
