OpenAI engineer arrested for allegedly planting recording device

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi Arabian engineer and former OpenAI employee, has been arrested by the FBI. He is accused of using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications at OpenAI’s San Francisco headquarters.

Investigators discovered a sophisticated, encrypted recording device hidden in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a television in an executive conference room. This room was used for highly confidential discussions regarding proprietary research, product roadmaps, and government relations. A second device was later found in an unattended bag containing Alfozan’s identification and wallet.

Evidence suggests Alfozan used a chatbot account linked to his spouse to research how to build, hide, and remotely access recording devices. He also allegedly used internal productivity tools to gather information about meeting room locations and schedules. Security footage reportedly placed him near the restricted conference room on several occasions.

Alfozan had booked a one-way flight to Saudi Arabia, scheduled to depart on October 12, 2026, just days after his arrest on October 9. OpenAI stated that its own AI models helped identify the responsible employee and confirmed there is no indication that model weights, source code, or customer data were compromised. If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
