OpenAI introduces visual ads and virtual try-on features for ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing significant updates to ChatGPT, focusing on monetization through advertising and enhanced e-commerce capabilities. The company will begin testing a new visual advertisement format in the United States later this month. These ads will appear during image generation workflows, clearly labeled and kept separate from AI-generated content to ensure they do not influence model responses. To support advertisers, OpenAI is expanding its measurement and attribution ecosystem through partnerships with firms such as LiveRamp, AppsFlyer, and Triple Whale.

In the e-commerce sector, OpenAI has launched a global virtual try-on feature powered by the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. This tool allows users to upload selfies or full-body photos to visualize how clothing and accessories might look on them. Additionally, a new 'Favorites' feature enables users to save products and generated images in a personal library for future reference.

To comply with the EU AI Act, OpenAI will also implement invisible watermarking technology, known as textGrain, for content generated by ChatGPT and Codex in the European Union. This initiative aims to provide machine-readable signals to identify AI-generated text, although the company noted that the technology is still evolving and can be affected by editing or translation.
