OpenAI expands ChatGPT with Microsoft Word integration and Linux app
OpenAI is significantly expanding the accessibility and workflow integration of ChatGPT through several major updates. A key development is the rollout of ChatGPT for Microsoft Word, which allows users across all subscription tiers—including Free—to access an AI sidebar directly within the application. This integration enables users to draft, summarize, proofread, and format documents using the current file as context, reducing the need to switch between applications. For Business and Enterprise customers, OpenAI is offering a limited-time trial of the GPT-5.6 Sol model within Word.
In addition to office productivity, OpenAI has launched an official ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, currently in public preview for distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, and Arch Linux. This release supports both x64 and ARM64 processors and allows developers to interact with ChatGPT and Codex while working with local files.
Furthermore, the ChatGPT Sites feature has received upgrades to support multi-user collaboration via a ‘Build Together’ framework, custom domain binding, and natural language database querying. These updates aim to transition the tool from a personal prototyping utility to a more robust platform for team-based web application deployment, reportedly cutting deployment times by approximately 50%.
