OpenAI faces massive losses amid AI infrastructure financing concerns

Leaked and independently verified 2025 financial documents from OpenAI reveal significant economic challenges within the artificial intelligence industry. The company reported $13.07 billion in revenue against $34 billion in total costs and expenses, resulting in a net loss of $38.53 billion.

This loss represents a substantial increase from 2024, when the company lost $5.09 billion on $3.7 billion in revenue. Research and development expenses alone reached $19.18 billion, exceeding the company's total earnings.

Analysts, including Ed Zitron, suggest the primary issue facing the AI sector is infrastructure financing. The industry is currently funding buildouts using long-term debt models typically reserved for permanent infrastructure, despite the fact that the core productive assets—GPUs—have a much shorter functional lifespan than traditional assets like railroads or telecom fiber.
