AI deciphers 217-year-old Napoleonic military letter

OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra model has successfully deciphered a 217-year-old military letter from the Napoleonic era in approximately six hours. The breakthrough was achieved by Carter Church, an AI engineer at cybersecurity firm SentinelOne, using a single low-resolution scan of the document.

The encrypted message, dated March 1809, was sent from the headquarters of Eugène de Beauharnais, the Viceroy of Italy, to French Marshal Auguste de Marmont. It contained sensitive information regarding the positions of Bavarian, Polish, and French troops during the preparations for war against the Austrian Empire.

The document utilized a complex homophonic substitution cipher, featuring approximately 1,300 characters and 155 to 175 distinct handwritten symbols. The AI performed a multi-step process including image transcription, symbol recognition, code generation, and historical verification to reconstruct the text. This discovery provides historians with new insights into Napoleonic military communications and troop movements in the Adriatic region.
