OpenAI grants free ChatGPT access to 100,000 academics through 2027
OpenAI announced the "ChatGPT for Academic Researchers" program, offering free access to its frontier models for up to 100,000 researchers worldwide. The rollout begins this summer with 10,000 participants and will expand gradually until 2027.
Eligible scholars receive access to the GPT‑5.6 Sol Pro model and may invite up to four collaborators from the same institution. The service includes business‑grade privacy and security, and user data are excluded from model training by default. Early partner institutions are the Institute for Advanced Study and France’s École normale supérieure.
The initiative forms part of OpenAI’s plan to invest more than $250 million in external scientific research and discovery through 2027, aiming to accelerate advances across biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics and physics.
