OpenAI develops donut-shaped AI smart speaker with Jony Ive
OpenAI is developing its first consumer hardware device, a screenless smart speaker designed to serve as a physical embodiment of ChatGPT. Developed in collaboration with Jony Ive’s creative firm, LoveFrom, the device is expected to feature a unique, donut-shaped or ring-like aesthetic roughly the size of a hockey puck.
Reports indicate the device will be battery-powered, allowing users to move it between rooms easily. It is expected to include a camera, microphones, sensors, and moving mechanical parts intended to give the device a sense of “personality” and awareness of its surroundings. The hardware aims to move AI interaction away from smartphone screens and into ambient living environments.
The device is projected to be priced between $300 and $400. It will reportedly utilize OpenAI’s GPT-Live-1 full-duplex voice model, which allows for simultaneous listening and speaking, delegating complex reasoning to GPT-5. The product is anticipated to launch around 2027.
