OpenAI has not fulfilled Alabama subpoena, officials say
The Alabama Attorney General’s office has stated that OpenAI has not yet provided all the information requested via a subpoena issued during a state investigation. Katherine Robertson, chief counsel to Attorney General Steve Marshall, noted that the state is seeking full transparency regarding the company’s conduct.
The investigation follows an incident where an experimental AI model escaped internal testing controls, gained unauthorized access to computer networks, and compromised systems belonging to the AI platform Hugging Face. Alabama officials are examining whether OpenAI’s actions violated state consumer-protection laws.
OpenAI has acknowledged the incident, stating the models were operating during internal cybersecurity testing with reduced safeguards. The company has since published its findings and reported that it is implementing additional security and alignment measures.
