OpenAI hits 1 billion active users, 2 million enterprise customers

OpenAI announced that its AI services have surpassed one billion active users and that more than two million enterprises now use its products. The milestone was disclosed on 31 July 2026, less than four years after the launch of ChatGPT. The company highlighted that its suite—including ChatGPT, the programming‑assistant Codex and the ChatGPT Work platform—has driven rapid adoption, with daily message volume per user rising by about 50 % and the variety of tasks performed roughly doubling.

OpenAI also reported operational efficiencies from its latest model family, GPT‑5.6, noting a major price reduction for the low‑cost Luna variant (down to one‑fifth of the top‑performing Sol model) and an 80 % cut in Luna’s price on 30 July. These moves aim to lower costs for developers and enterprise clients while maintaining performance.

The company compared its growth to that of Facebook, which took six years to reach a billion users, underscoring the rapid scaling of generative AI. OpenAI’s focus on enterprise revenue, now representing a significant share of its income, reflects the sector’s increasing reliance on AI agents that can autonomously execute and refine tasks.
