OpenAI surpasses 1 billion active users and slashes Luna model price by 80%
OpenAI announced that its AI models, including ChatGPT, Codex and ChatGPT Work, now serve more than 1 billion active users, a milestone reached in under four years after the November 2022 launch of ChatGPT. The company also reported having over 2 million business customers, a segment it has prioritized since late 2025.
In early July 2026 OpenAI introduced three variants of its GPT‑5.6 family – Luna, Terra and Sol – and immediately reduced the price of Luna by 80 % and Terra by 20 %. The price cuts aim to make advanced AI more affordable amid growing competition from open‑source and Chinese models. At the end of February 2026, OpenAI recorded 900 million weekly active users. The firm generated $5.7 billion in revenue in the first quarter of 2026 but posted a non‑GAAP operating loss of 122 %.
