OpenAI launches ChatGPT plugin for Apple Messages on Mac

OpenAI has released a new Apple Messages plugin for the ChatGPT desktop application on macOS, specifically for users with Apple Silicon. This integration allows ChatGPT to interact with iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations.

Through this plugin, users can ask the AI to search through message history, summarize long threads, and extract specific information. The tool also enables ChatGPT to draft and send messages on behalf of the user. While OpenAI states that the plugin operates locally and requires explicit user consent for both content and recipients, the feature has sparked significant privacy debates. Concerns have been raised regarding the level of access required, such as Full Disk Access, and reports of instances where messages could potentially be sent without sufficient human confirmation.

The feature is currently limited to ChatGPT Work and Codex users on Mac and is not available on web or mobile platforms. OpenAI has advised users to be cautious with persistent approval settings to ensure they maintain a final opportunity to review messages before they are sent.
