OpenAI introduces Locked Chats for ChatGPT privacy

OpenAI has launched a new security feature called “Locked Chats,” allowing users to protect specific conversations from unauthorized access on shared devices. Users can secure these chats using a four-digit PIN on web and desktop platforms, or through biometric authentication such as Face ID and Touch ID on compatible mobile devices.

Locked chats are moved from the standard history, pinned chats, and search results into a dedicated “Locked Chats” space. Unlike the “Temporary Chat” mode, which deletes history entirely, locked chats are preserved in the account and utilize a separate memory system to prevent sensitive information from appearing in other conversation contexts.

OpenAI notes several limitations: the feature does not provide end-to-end encryption, meaning content remains accessible on company servers, and it does not alter data retention or training settings. Additionally, if a user forgets their PIN and must reset their account access, all locked chats and associated files will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
