OpenAI introduces PIN protection for ChatGPT conversations
OpenAI has launched a new security feature allowing users to lock specific ChatGPT conversations using a four-digit PIN. Once locked, these conversations are removed from the standard chat history and search results. Users can access protected chats via a dedicated section using their PIN or device authentication methods such as Face ID or Touch ID.
The feature is being rolled out gradually across various subscription tiers, including Free, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. It is available on the web, iOS, and Android, while desktop users require the dedicated ChatGPT application for macOS or Windows. While the PIN protects conversation content and uploaded files, OpenAI noted that it does not provide end-to-end encryption or alter existing data retention policies.
This update follows recent privacy concerns regarding a feature that allowed some users' private conversations to appear in Google search results. OpenAI has since removed that indexing functionality, describing it as a short-term experiment.
