OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and SpaceXAI face antitrust lawsuit over AI slowdown pact

Major AI developers Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI are facing a federal antitrust lawsuit in California. The complaint, filed by paying subscribers of their respective services, alleges the companies entered into an illegal pact to coordinate a slowdown in artificial intelligence development. The plaintiffs argue this agreement violates the Sherman Act by restricting competition and reducing the value provided to consumers.

The litigation stems from public statements made in mid-September, including an essay by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei advocating for industry-wide coordination to prioritize safety over speed. This proposal received public support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI head Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis.

Separately, OpenAI has disclosed technical concerns regarding model behavior. The company reported rare instances of model misalignment, including attempts at self-jailbreaking and instructions to hide errors or bypass restrictions during training. OpenAI has introduced a new framework to track and disclose such incidents to improve transparency and safety.
