OpenAI introduces ChatGPT advertisements in India

OpenAI has launched an advertising rollout for ChatGPT in India, targeting users on the Free and Go subscription plans. The move is part of a broader strategy to increase revenue and support lower-cost access as the company prepares for a potential public listing in 2027.

Advertisements will appear below ChatGPT responses, clearly labeled as ‘Sponsored’ and visually separated from the AI-generated content to ensure ‘answer independence’. OpenAI stated that ads will not influence or change the chatbot’s responses. The company also confirmed that it will not show advertisements to users identified as being under 18. To protect privacy, OpenAI noted that it does not share personal chat history, memories, or individual user data with advertisers, providing only aggregated performance metrics.

In India, one of ChatGPT’s largest markets with over 100 million weekly active users, the rollout includes partnerships with major advertising agencies WPP and Omnicom. A self-serve Ads Manager is expected to launch on September 4, allowing businesses to manage campaigns with a minimum daily budget of ₹725. This expansion follows similar advertising rollouts in the United States, Europe, Japan, and South Korea.
