OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads hits $1 billion revenue run rate

OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT Ads business reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion in less than 200 days since its launch. This milestone marks a significant expansion of the company’s diversified revenue model, which includes enterprise contracts, consumer subscriptions, and API usage. To further this growth, OpenAI is expanding its self-service Ads Manager to advertisers in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Currently, advertisements are displayed to users on the Free and Go subscription tiers, while Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise accounts remain ad-free. OpenAI emphasizes that ads are clearly labeled, appear as sponsored content beneath AI-generated responses, and do not influence the content of the answers. The company also noted that advertisers do not have access to private user conversations.

Simultaneously, the European Commission has designated ChatGPT as a very large online search engine under the Digital Services Act (DSA). Along with Reddit and Roblox, ChatGPT must now comply with stricter regulations regarding risk mitigation and user protection. These platforms have four months to meet these additional obligations or face potential fines of up to 6 percent of their annual global turnover.
