OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with enhanced safety features
OpenAI has launched ‘ChatGPT for Teens,’ a specialized experience tailored for users aged 13 to 17. The rollout introduces enhanced safety protocols and educational tools designed to mitigate risks associated with AI use among minors.
Key features include ‘Study Mode,’ which acts as a tutor by providing guiding questions and step-by-step explanations rather than direct answers, and ‘Responsible Homework Reminders’ to discourage cheating. The system also incorporates ‘Study Hours’ and ‘Quiet Hours’ to manage usage. To ensure safety, OpenAI implemented stricter content filters regarding violence, self-harm, eating disorders, and explicit material. The platform is also programmed to avoid romantic language and prevent users from forming emotional dependencies on the AI.
To identify younger users, OpenAI utilizes an age-estimation system that analyzes approximately 2,000 signals, including usage patterns and account history. If the system detects a user is likely under 18, it automatically applies the teen experience. Parents can manage certain settings through linked accounts, though they cannot read specific conversations.
This initiative follows significant legal and public scrutiny, including lawsuits alleging that inappropriate chatbot interactions contributed to the deaths of young people. While OpenAI has introduced these safeguards, child safety experts have called for greater transparency and independent verification of the system’s effectiveness.
