OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens and expands advertising into Europe

OpenAI is implementing two major updates to its ChatGPT service: the launch of a specialized version for teenagers and the expansion of its advertising program into Europe.

ChatGPT for Teens is designed for users aged 13 to 17. The experience is applied automatically based on age declaration or system prediction. It includes enhanced safety measures to restrict content related to self-harm, eating disorders, sexual content, and graphic violence. To support education, the version features a Study Mode that provides step-by-step guidance rather than immediate answers, alongside educational visualizations. OpenAI also introduced parental controls, allowing parents to set study hours and receive notifications regarding unsafe discussions, such as those involving eating disorders.

Simultaneously, OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Ads across 31 European markets, starting August 24, 2026. This expansion brings the total number of markets with ads to 40. Advertisements will be visible to users on the Free and Go tiers, while Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscribers will remain ad-free. OpenAI states that ads will be clearly labeled, separated from AI responses, and will not influence the chatbot's answers. In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, the company will not use personalized ads or sell user data to advertisers. The rollout faces scrutiny regarding the EU AI Act and potential impacts on user privacy and emotional dependence.
