OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Teens with enhanced safety features FAST-MOVING

OpenAI has launched “ChatGPT for Teens,” a specialized version of its chatbot designed for users aged 13 to 17. The rollout includes enhanced safety guardrails, such as content restrictions regarding suicide, self-harm, and romantic or sexual topics. To promote healthy usage, the platform features “Study Mode,” which guides students through learning with questions rather than providing direct answers, and “Quiet Hours” to limit usage.

The new experience introduces parental controls, allowing parents to link accounts and receive alerts regarding high-risk discussions. OpenAI also plans to use AI to estimate user ages to ensure protections are applied to suspected minors. These measures come as the company faces legal scrutiny and lawsuits alleging that inappropriate chatbot interactions have contributed to harm or deaths among young users.

Additional features include break reminders for users active for 90 minutes within a three-hour window and improved protections to prevent the AI from expressing personal feelings or consciousness. The move follows increased regulatory pressure and inquiries from the US Federal Trade Commission regarding the risks of AI chatbots acting as digital companions.
