OpenAI's ChatGPT suffers global outage affecting millions worldwide

On Saturday, July 25, 2026, OpenAI confirmed a worldwide service disruption that halted ChatGPT, its API and the Codex code‑assistant. Downdetector recorded more than 1,500 user reports within an hour, with roughly 80 % indicating problems accessing the ChatGPT web interface, 8 % reporting issues with the mobile app, and another 8 % affected by API failures. Users in the United States, Europe, India, Japan, Australia and other regions experienced login failures, authentication errors, missing chat history and “service unavailable” messages when submitting prompts. OpenAI posted on its status page that it was investigating elevated error rates across the affected services and had applied mitigation measures while monitoring recovery. No specific cause or timeline for full restoration was disclosed. The outage, occurring just days after a prior large‑scale incident that also impacted ChatGPT, Codex and the API, highlighted the growing reliance of both consumers and businesses on OpenAI’s AI platforms, as thousands of companies depend on the API for customer‑support tools, productivity software and other AI‑driven applications.
