OpenAI launches ChatGPT Health in the United States, expanding AI health support

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health, a dedicated environment within the ChatGPT app for health‑related queries. As of 23 July 2026 the service is available to all users aged 18 and over in the United States via the web and iOS devices, but it is not yet offered in Europe. The platform lets users connect data from Apple Health, fitness and nutrition apps, and compatible electronic medical records, enabling them to request summaries of recent lab results, track laboratory values, prepare questions for doctors, and receive diet or exercise suggestions. OpenAI stresses that the service is not intended for diagnosis or treatment and is designed to support, not replace, professional medical care. The company reports that more than 300 million people ask health‑related questions to ChatGPT each week, and over 260 physicians have evaluated hundreds of thousands of model responses to improve the system’s handling of urgent situations.

Use of AI chatbots for health and mental‑health support is growing worldwide. Research cited by the Harvard Business Review shows AI is now the most common tool for emotional companionship, surpassing other personal‑organising applications. In Spain, a 2025 study found nine out of ten teenagers use AI for health information, while an AXA Mind Health Report indicates 71 % of the Mexican population turns to AI for mental‑health issues. The World Health Organization estimates more than one billion people globally live with a mental disorder. Concerns about inaccurate or out‑of‑context advice have led the European Union to place health‑related AI systems under stricter requirements of the Artificial Intelligence Act.
