OpenAI has announced a major update to ChatGPT, coinciding with the platform reaching 1 billion weekly active users. The update introduces the GPT-5.6 model series, featuring specialized architectures: GPT-5.6 Luna, which will become the standard for free and Go users, and GPT-5.6 Sol, designed for Plus and Pro subscribers to handle complex reasoning and professional tasks.

Free and Go users will benefit from unlimited text-based conversations and a new ‘Think’ button to enable deeper reasoning for difficult questions. While text limits are being removed, restrictions on file uploads and image generation remain. For paid subscribers, the Sol model offers improved factual accuracy, with internal tests showing a 68% reduction in errors for medical, legal, and financial queries compared to previous versions. Plus and Pro users also gain a new slider to manually adjust the depth of reasoning.

Additionally, OpenAI launched GPT-Live, a full-duplex voice AI architecture that allows for natural, simultaneous listening and speaking. This mode is available on web, Android, and iOS, with Pro, Plus, and Go users accessing the full GPT-Live-1 model, while free users receive a mini version. For business users, OpenAI introduced Premium Seats for ChatGPT Business at $125 per user per month, offering five times the usage capacity and removing the five-hour usage limit.
