OpenAI launches GPT‑5.6 family, GPT‑Live voice model and ChatGPT Work AI agent
OpenAI released its GPT‑5.6 series—Sol, Terra and Luna—on Thursday, 9 July 2026 after a delay for additional U.S. government safety reviews. The models are billed as more capable in coding, cybersecurity, biology and other frontier tasks, with Sol positioned as the flagship. The rollout follows a Trump‑administration executive order that asks AI firms to give the government voluntary access to frontier models; reports say the administration gave a “green light,” though the White House later said no formal approval was required.
At the same time OpenAI introduced GPT‑Live, a full‑duplex voice model family (GPT‑Live‑1 and GPT‑Live‑1 mini) that can listen and speak simultaneously, handling interruptions and real‑time translation while delegating deeper reasoning to GPT‑5.5. The new voice capability is now available to all ChatGPT users.
OpenAI also unveiled ChatGPT Work, an AI agent that combines ChatGPT with the Codex coding tool to automate cross‑app tasks such as drafting documents, creating presentations, building websites and managing project data. The feature targets enterprise users and positions OpenAI against Anthropic’s Claude Cowork and Microsoft’s Copilot offerings.
Overall, the launches mark a coordinated push to expand OpenAI’s model portfolio, voice interaction, and workplace automation amid heightened U.S.–China competition over advanced AI technologies.
