OpenAI model solves quasi-Riemann hypothesis in mathematics
An OpenAI artificial intelligence model has reportedly solved the quasi-Riemann hypothesis, a weaker version of one of mathematics' most famous open problems. The results, contained within a 49-page document published in October 2026, have prompted intense scrutiny from leading number theorists.
Jared Duker Lichtman of Stanford University described the achievement as “the most important achievement of artificial intelligence in mathematics to date, by far.” Experts note that the implications are significant, as many consequences of the original Riemann hypothesis can be deduced from the quasi-Riemann version.
The breakthrough was achieved using a large language model employing hundreds of agents working over several days or weeks. This development has caused significant discussion within the mathematical community regarding the future role of human researchers and the methodology used by AI to unravel pure science.
