OpenAI posts $5.7 bn Q1 revenue while reporting $9.3 bn loss as its rise becomes focus of new podcast

OpenAI disclosed that in the first quarter of 2026 it generated $5.7 billion in revenue, a three‑fold increase from the same period a year earlier. The same quarter showed an operating loss of $9.3 billion and a net loss of $21.3 billion, of which $12.4 billion were non‑cash accounting adjustments. Cash burn over the three months amounted to $3.7 billion, while the company retained a cash position of more than $73 billion in liquid assets and securities. The firm expects to achieve positive cash flow only around 2030.

Separately, Germany’s Deutschlandfunk released a six‑part podcast series titled “Die OpenAI Story.” The series chronicles OpenAI’s evolution from its 2015 founding by Sam Altman and Elon Musk as a nonprofit to its current status as a multibillion‑dollar enterprise. Episodes detail the rapid scaling of AI models, the global competition for compute and capital, the launch of ChatGPT, a brief removal and reinstatement of Altman as CEO in November 2023, and broader societal questions about AI safety, regulation, and human‑machine relationships. The podcast features commentary from AI researchers and industry observers, highlighting both the technological breakthroughs and the governance challenges surrounding the company.
