OpenAI Promotes Uday Ruddaraju to CTO of Compute

OpenAI has promoted Indian‑origin technologist Uday Ruddaraju to chief technology officer of its Compute division. Ruddaraju, a Hyderabad native who earned a bachelor's degree at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology and a master's at the University of Minnesota, previously held engineering leadership roles at eBay, Robinhood and Elon Musk’s xAI, where he helped build the "Colossus" supercomputer.

He joined OpenAI in July 2025 as head of Compute and Infrastructure and, after a year, announced his new role in a LinkedIn post, saying, "My first 12 months at OpenAI have been incredibly rewarding. Our Compute team has worked relentlessly to bring capacity online quickly and reliably, while doing the deep systems work needed to train frontier models like GPT‑5, 6." He outlined plans to expand the company’s compute footprint to support future AI models.

The promotion sparked an online debate about whether moving abroad remains a prerequisite for reaching senior leadership in global tech firms, with commentators citing Ruddaraju’s career path as evidence that talent can rise from India while also noting broader challenges such as immigration policy and job market shifts.
