OpenAI releases ChatGPT desktop app preview for Linux

OpenAI has released a preview version of its official ChatGPT desktop application for Linux. This release addresses a long-standing gap for developers, system administrators, and researchers who primarily use Linux environments.

The application integrates ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex into a single workspace. This allows users to manage conversations, professional contexts, and coding tools simultaneously without switching between browser tabs. Codex specifically provides enhanced support for programming tasks, which is highly relevant for the Linux user base.

The preview version supports specific distributions including Ubuntu (24.04 LTS and 26.04 LTS), Debian 13, and Fedora (43 and 44). It is available for both x64 and ARM64 architectures via DEB and RPM packages. While the app allows for local file interaction and project management, certain features like ‘Computer Use’ are currently unavailable and planned for future updates. Experimental support for Wayland is included, though the app primarily utilizes XWayland for compatibility.
