OpenAI releases GPT-5.6 while Chinese firms dominate top AI model usage

OpenAI announced that its latest GPT‑5.6 series – Sol, Terra and Luna – is now publicly available, ending a limited government‑only preview. The rollout includes the new ChatGPT Work platform and integrates Codex into the desktop ChatGPT app, bringing advanced code‑editing features to users.

At the same time, analysis of the OpenRouter platform shows a rapid rise in Chinese AI models among the 50 most‑used models worldwide. Their share grew from five at the start of 2025 to twenty by May 2026, while the dominance of U.S.‑based models is gradually declining. Models from Canada (Cohere) and France (Mistral AI) remain minor contributors.

Both developments highlight a shifting landscape in generative AI, with OpenAI expanding its product suite and Chinese companies gaining a larger footprint in global model usage.
