OpenAI adds unified search, desktop fixes and ChatGPT Work agent to ChatGPT

OpenAI has rolled out a suite of updates to its ChatGPT service. A new search feature now indexes chats, projects, documents, images and other stored content across the web, iOS and Android apps, letting users locate past material in seconds and open it directly from the results. The upgrade is live for all plans, including free accounts.

The company also released a correction to the recently redesigned desktop application. Conversation history and projects are back in the sidebar, and chat and Work histories now sync across web, desktop and mobile devices. A dedicated switch lets users move between Chat and Work modes, matching the layout of the web and mobile interfaces. Local tasks remain stored only on the computer.

Alongside the search and UI improvements, OpenAI introduced "ChatGPT Work," an agent powered by the GPT‑5.6 model that can perform multi‑step projects, access files and third‑party apps, and execute actions on the user's device. The agent is designed to handle complex workflows such as drafting documents, generating presentations, and managing scheduled tasks, expanding ChatGPT from a question‑answer tool to a broader productivity platform. These changes respond to user feedback and are available across all supported platforms.
