Anthropic expands into biology labs and partners with Accenture for AI safety
Anthropic is expanding its operations into physical biological research and AI safety through two major strategic moves. The company has established a wet laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct physical experiments, moving beyond purely computer-based simulations. This facility aims to explore life sciences and preclinical drug programs, potentially targeting diseases that the traditional pharmaceutical industry may overlook. Simultaneously, Anthropic has entered a significant partnership with Accenture to enhance AI safety. Both companies have committed to investing at least $1 billion each over the next five years to build evaluation capacity. This collaboration will utilize an ‘embedded evaluation’ model, where Accenture’s specialist AI unit, Faculty, will work directly within Anthropic. These evaluators will have access comparable to employees, allowing them to observe model training, conduct red-teaming, perform alignment assessments, and test safeguards.
