OpenAI rolls out enhanced ChatGPT memory for all users

OpenAI has upgraded the memory system that powers ChatGPT, introducing a new “Dreaming” process that automatically extracts useful details from past conversations. The improvement lets the model retain context more accurately, link related topics and keep information up‑to‑date, reducing the need for users to repeat personal preferences.

For the first time the memory feature is available to free‑tier users, though with smaller storage limits than paid subscribers. Plus and Pro subscribers retain higher capacity and earlier access. Users can view a Memory Summary page, edit or delete stored details, and toggle the feature on or off, giving greater control over personal data. The update also lowers the computing power required for the Dreaming system, enabling a broader rollout over the coming weeks.

The change is being deployed initially in the United States for paid tiers and is expected to reach additional regions and free users globally in the near term.
