OpenAI reports Apple ChatGPT integration underperformed

OpenAI has revealed in recent court filings that its partnership with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into Siri and Apple Intelligence has “dramatically underperformed.” According to the documents, the integration saw a slow start following its December 2024 launch, partly due to a multi-step opt-in process that created user friction. OpenAI noted that it had to lower its forecasts for weekly active users and expressed disappointment that the expected “halo effect” from Apple’s brand did not materialize. The filings are part of an antitrust legal battle involving Elon Musk’s xAI, which had previously challenged the partnership. OpenAI clarified that the agreement was non-exclusive, noting that Apple refused a request for a two-year exclusivity period and has since partnered with Google to use Gemini models.

Separately, OpenAI is expanding its commercial and technical capabilities. The company is rolling out ChatGPT Ads across several Asian markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan. The advertising platform, which has reached an annualized revenue run rate of $1 billion, is available to users on Free and Go plans. Additionally, OpenAI has introduced agentic capabilities to ChatGPT’s voice mode, allowing users to perform complex tasks like creating documents and managing emails via voice commands.

On the infrastructure side, OpenAI reported that its product family has surpassed one billion weekly active users. To support this scale, the company successfully migrated its Habitat storage system from Python to Rust, resulting in a six-fold increase in CPU efficiency and a fifteen-fold increase in memory efficiency.
