OpenAI AI systems solve major mathematical problems

OpenAI has announced that an experimental artificial intelligence system has produced a solution to the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness problem, one of the Millennium Prize Problems. The company has released both a demonstration and a formalization in Lean, though the result requires further scrutiny from the mathematical community to be officially established.

This follows a previous announcement in May where an OpenAI model refuted a central conjecture regarding the Erdős unit distance problem. These developments indicate that AI is moving beyond routine tasks and is beginning to intervene in complex problems at the frontier of mathematical and theoretical computer science knowledge.

Discussions regarding AI continue to focus on the balance between its transformative potential for science and economy versus the risks of losing human control or the impact on individual free will as systems become more personalized.
