OpenAI releases 722 mathematical manuscripts, sparking academic debate

OpenAI has released 722 mathematical manuscripts via GitHub, representing 372 research results in fields including number theory and geometry. The company claims these results were generated by an unreleased internal model, with each result requiring approximately three hours of computation. While OpenAI states that roughly half of the proofs have been verified using the Lean programming language, the sudden mass release has sparked significant controversy within the global mathematical community.

Critics and mathematicians have expressed concerns regarding academic integrity and the erosion of traditional research methods. Some scholars argue that the bulk release of findings without providing model details or prompts forces human mathematicians into the role of unpaid verifiers, describing the move as an exercise of corporate power rather than scientific collaboration. There are also fears that the industrial-scale output of AI could disrupt the development of young mathematicians and the established peer-review process.

In response to the shifting landscape, the Chiu Cheng-tung Mathematics and AI Laboratory Alliance has been established at Tsinghua University. The alliance aims to research AI-assisted formal proofs, conjecture discovery, and the development of specialized mathematical large language models. The initiative seeks to integrate AI as a tool for discovery while addressing the need for new academic standards in the age of automated mathematics.
