OpenAI Submits Confidential S‑1 Filing for US IPO

OpenAI announced that it has confidentially filed a draft S‑1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, indicating an intention to pursue a public listing though no specific timetable has been set. The company said the filing provides flexibility to go public sooner if conditions become favorable.

CEO Sam Altman noted that the filing aligns with OpenAI’s three‑stage roadmap toward artificial general intelligence and a product‑focused business model. CFO Samantha Priore has said the firm hopes to allocate shares to a broad base of investors when the IPO occurs. OpenAI is currently valued at roughly $8.5 billion after its latest funding round and serves over 900 million weekly active users of ChatGPT.

The move follows a similar confidential filing by rival Anthropic earlier in June and comes weeks after a court ruling in a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk against OpenAI and Altman. Analysts view the filing as a milestone for the rapidly expanding AI sector.
