OpenAI launches ChatGPT for Microsoft Word and tests Sponsored Agents

OpenAI has expanded its ecosystem through two major developments: the launch of a ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Word and the testing of a new advertising format called Sponsored Agents.

On September 17, 2026, OpenAI released the ChatGPT for Word add-in, available via the Microsoft Marketplace. This tool allows users to draft, summarize, rewrite, and format documents directly within a sidebar in Word. The integration is available to all ChatGPT users, including those on free plans, though usage is subject to existing plan token limits. For organizational users, data from Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans is not used for model training by default. The add-in also integrates with external services like Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox to provide context for document creation.

Simultaneously, OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents on September 16, 2026. This advertising model allows users to click an ad and enter a separate, labeled conversation with a company-sponsored AI agent to ask specific product questions. This initial testing phase is limited to selected advertisers in the United States. To support this new revenue stream, OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT Ads with HubSpot and Shopify, enabling businesses to manage campaigns and track sales through existing CRM and e-commerce platforms. OpenAI's advertising revenue reached an annual run rate of $1 billion by the end of August 2026.
