OpenAI to end model supply for Cursor following SpaceX acquisition
OpenAI has announced its intention to terminate the supply of its artificial intelligence models to Cursor, a popular AI-powered coding tool. The decision follows SpaceX’s $60 billion acquisition of Anysphere, the developer of Cursor, which was finalized in August 2026.
OpenAI has proposed November 12, 2026, as the cutoff date, utilizing the maximum notice period allowed under the existing contract. The company cited a lack of confidence in SpaceX’s ability to adhere to its terms of service, pointing to past contract violations by Elon Musk’s other companies, such as X and xAI. OpenAI also specified that it will not provide any new models to Cursor during this transition period, explicitly excluding its upcoming Astra model.
Elon Musk has criticized the move, labeling OpenAI leadership, including Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, as untrustworthy. Cursor co-founder Michael Truell noted that OpenAI models currently account for approximately 5% of Cursor’s user traffic and stated that the company is in discussions with OpenAI to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, Anthropic has indicated it will expand its support for Cursor to provide Claude models as an alternative.
