OpenAI develops screenless AI device with Jony Ive
OpenAI is reportedly developing its first major hardware product, a screenless, donut-shaped AI device designed to function as a portable "AI-first computer" or advanced personal assistant. The project is being conducted in partnership with LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
Expected to launch around 2027, the device is envisioned to be approximately the size of a hockey puck and powered by a battery for easy portability throughout a home. Unlike traditional stationary smart speakers, this device may include moving mechanical parts, lights, and sensors—including cameras—to help the AI understand its physical environment and provide more natural, interactive responses.
The estimated price range is between $300 and $400, positioning it as a premium product compared to mainstream smart speakers from competitors like Amazon and Google. This move marks OpenAI's expansion from software into a physical ecosystem intended to facilitate more seamless, voice-based interactions using advanced models similar to ChatGPT's voice mode.
