OpenAI expands globally, faces regulator probe, reports losses and market‑share dip

OpenAI has filed a confidential IPO request with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission while simultaneously responding to a multi‑state subpoena that seeks documents on how ChatGPT protects users. The company said it will cooperate with the investigation led by the New York Attorney General.

The firm announced the expansion of its ChatGPT advertising pilot to Brazil, adding the market to the United States, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea. Ads will appear only to adult users on free plans and will be clearly labeled.

OpenAI also rolled out a new personal‑finance feature that lets paid‑plan users link bank accounts via Plaid to view spending, savings and investment data, though the tool does not execute transactions.

A new Madrid office will open later this year to strengthen ties with Spanish companies and research institutions.

User growth continues: ChatGPT surpassed 1.1 billion monthly active users, the fastest‑growing online app ever. However, a Sensor Tower report shows its market‑share fell to 46.4 %, losing the majority position to Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. At the same time, OpenAI’s financial losses are accelerating as research, compute and talent costs rise.
