Openchip launches European sovereign BER10 industrial chip

Barcelona‑based Openchip unveiled its first industrial‑grade processor, the BER10, designed to give Europe greater digital sovereignty. The 64‑bit RISC‑V chip incorporates four high‑performance CPU cores, a wide vector‑processing unit, multichannel fast memory and high‑speed links, and can run a full Linux operating system and AI workloads.

Openchip highlighted that the open‑source instruction set belongs to no single company or country, allowing critical European sectors to keep sensitive data on domestically controlled hardware. The processor was fabricated using an advanced gate‑all‑around (GAA) process, matching the technology used in data‑center CPUs worldwide.

The launch coincides with the company finalising a €250 million financing round, having already secured €115 million from the SETT fund and a 51 % stake acquisition. Openchip’s president Tobías Martínez – former Cellnex CEO – and CEO Francesc Guim described the chip as “the concrete step Europe needs for digital sovereignty”. Openchip is among three Catalan firms receiving significant Next Generation EU funding.
