OpenClaw 2.0 releases major update for open-source AI agent
OpenClaw has released version 2026.8.1, designated as OpenClaw 2.0, marking its most significant update since its launch last November. The release features a redesigned browser application that serves as a central workspace for monitoring agent activities, managing settings, and continuing conversations.
Key technical improvements include a guided onboarding process that automatically detects existing AI access on a user’s machine, such as API keys or local models running through Ollama and LM Studio. The update also introduces a migration from file-based session storage to SQLite. Additionally, a new shared cloud session feature allows authorized collaborators to join or take over work via a Gateway without needing direct access to provider credentials.
Despite the technical overhaul, the project faces increased competition from integrated tools like Microsoft’s Scout and specialized features in ChatGPT and Claude. The project was transitioned to a nonprofit foundation in July.
