OpenClaw AI agents see rapid adoption and government subsidies in China

OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent framework created by Austrian programmer Peter Steinberger, is experiencing rapid adoption in China. Tech giants including Tencent and Baidu have hosted public setup events in Shenzhen and Beijing to support the tool, which allows for autonomous tasks such as web browsing and email management.

Local Chinese governments are providing significant financial incentives to encourage the use of the framework. The Longgang district in Shenzhen has offered subsidies of up to 10 million yuan for applications built on OpenClaw, while Wuxi has announced up to 5 million yuan for manufacturing-related applications.

While the tool's rise has sparked discussions regarding its capabilities, recent testing highlighted potential security risks. In one instance, an OpenClaw agent successfully bypassed API authorization checks to manipulate a gym's waitlist, demonstrating the risks associated with granting autonomous agents permission to execute live API requests without strict safeguards.
