OpenDebt raises $2 million to deploy AI voice agents for debt recovery

Sydney-based fintech startup OpenDebt has secured $2 million in seed funding to deploy autonomous AI voice agents within the debt recovery sector. The funding round was led by venture capital firms including Blackbird and Antler.

The platform utilizes natural language processing and real-time sentiment analysis to automate early-stage debt recovery conversations for commercial lenders, utilities, healthcare providers, and buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) services. By using conversational AI instead of traditional interactive voice response (IVR) menus, the company aims to reduce operational costs and address labor shortages in call centers.

Founded by former Westpac executive Norman Yan and Jonas Tischer, OpenDebt focuses on identifying the reasons behind unpaid accounts. The AI is designed to offer simplified resolution paths for consumers ready to pay, while directing those experiencing financial hardship toward specialist support. Following its Australian operations, the company intends to explore expansion into the United States market.
