OpenRouter users shift 84% of token volume to non-frontier AI models

Data from the AI model-routing platform OpenRouter indicates a significant shift in developer behavior toward lower-cost, non-frontier models. During the week of August 10, 84% of token volume was directed through models that are not considered state-of-the-art.

Analysis by venture capitalist Tomasz Tunguz shows that a small group of six models accounted for approximately 80% of OpenRouter's volume. These models deliver roughly 77% of the performance of frontier models while costing only about 2.5% of the price. For example, while a top-tier model like Claude Fable 5 costs approximately $20 per million tokens, the average cost for these high-volume models is roughly $0.50 per million tokens.

This trend suggests developers are increasingly prioritizing the balance of price and performance for routine workloads. The data also highlights a growing role for Chinese models, which have accounted for over 30% of US company token consumption on the platform, a significant increase from approximately 4.5% in early 2025. OpenRouter facilitates this by providing access to over 500 models through a single interface, offering features like :floor routing to prioritize the lowest-price providers.
