Opensignal launches interactive global D2D satellite-to-smartphone map

Opensignal has launched the world’s first interactive map providing a real-world depiction of direct-to-device (D2D) satellite connections with smartphones globally. The map, which will be updated monthly, uses billions of real-world measurements to show where smartphones have connected to D2D services since January 2026.

D2D technology allows standard smartphones to connect directly to satellites, extending mobile coverage to areas unreachable by terrestrial networks. While current services are largely limited to text messaging and emergency alerts due to spectrum and hardware constraints, the industry is working toward enabling voice and higher-speed data. As of August 2026, the Global Mobile Suppliers Association reported that 23 partnerships had launched satellite-to-cellphone services.
