openSUSE Leap introduces immutable mode for enhanced security

Starting with version 16.1, openSUSE Leap is introducing an immutable mode to enhance its security features. This new mode provides a transactionally updated system featuring a read-only root filesystem.

This functionality is based on technology previously found in Leap Micro, a specialized operating system designed for edge computing, virtualized environments, and containerized workloads. While Leap Micro is not a desktop OS, the integration into Leap allows desktop users to benefit from atomic updates and easy rollback capabilities. Developers intend the immutable mode to serve both specialized deployments, such as container and virtual machine hosts, and general desktop users who prioritize system stability and security.
