OpenXR introduces spatial containers for 3D multitasking

The Khronos Group has announced a new set of OpenXR extensions called “spatial containers,” designed to enable advanced multitasking within extended reality (XR) environments. This framework allows applications to switch between a “bounded” mode, where multiple apps can coexist in defined spatial windows, and an “immersive” mode that occupies the full field of view.

The functionality closely mirrors the “Shared Space” feature found in Apple’s visionOS, which allows multiple 3D applications to run side-by-side. This represents a significant shift for the OpenXR ecosystem, particularly compared to current Meta Quest multitasking, which generally limits users to one spatial app at a time alongside 2D windows.

While OpenXR is a royalty-free standard used by most major platforms, Apple currently uses its own proprietary APIs for the Vision Pro. The new spatial container extensions have been ratified and are expected to begin rolling out across the OpenXR ecosystem throughout 2026. Supported hardware may include Meta Quest, SteamVR-compatible headsets, Android XR devices, Varjo, Magic Leap, and XREAL glasses.
